On 23 May 2018 the BGRS is holding a Three Minute Thesis Competition which will be followed by a Poster Competition and a drinks reception. These combined events will provide opportunities to celebrate a diverse range of work from PhD Researchers across the College.
An 80,000 word thesis would take 9 hours to present… their time limit? 3 Minutes!
Join a selection of Birkbeck’s PhD students as they compete to show off their compelling thesis topics in just three minutes. The winner will be chosen by an expert panel of judges who will award:
- £500 to the overall winner
- £250 to the runner up
The audience will also get a chance to have their say by picking a people’s choice winner who’ll win a special prize. You can view the winning entries from the 2017 Birkbeck Three Minute Thesis Competition here.
How to take part
Canditates must be current Birkbeck PhD students who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (the submission of a research plan, usually at least 6 months into the beginning of study). You must also have permission from your supervisor. The competition will take place in front of a public audience and will be filmed and available online after the event.
In order to prepare you all potential participants for the Three Minute Thesis Competition must attend one of the 3 training which are taking place on the following dates. The training will enhance your presentation skills as well as preparing you for the competition.
Following the Three Minute Thesis Competition attendees will be able to view entries to the BGRS Poster Competition in the Clore Foyer. A drinks reception will be provided.
The winner of the poster competition will be awarded £300 and we will also be awarding 3 runners up prizes of £50 each.
How to take part
Posters should be prepared in A0 format but a limited number of landscape format posters can be displayed too. If you would like to enter the poster competition please complete this brief form by Wednesday 2 May.
