Birkbeck Graduate Research School is running a series of sessions in July 2017 for research students to write up their research in the company of others
What is Shut Up and Write?
The ‘Shut Up and Write’ sessions offer Birkbeck research students the chance to dedicate time to writing up research in the company of others. The format and aims are based on those described in the Thesis Whisperer blog and take the form of a series of focussed 25 minute writing sessions, each followed by a brief 5 minute break. During the breaks you can relax, speak with other students who are attending and enjoy a tea/ coffee.
17:45 – 18:00 Tea/ coffee
18:00 – 18:25 Writing
18:25 – 18:30 Break
18:30 – 18:55 Writing
18:55 – 19:00 Break
19:00 – 19:25 Writing
19:25 – 19:30 Break
19:30 – 19:55 Writing
During the writing sessions you will work in silence while in the company of other attendees. You will be invited to switch off your phone and to avoid any temptation to do anything except for writing.
One attendee will be asked in advance to act as the session organiser by keeping track of the time and announcing the start and end of each part of the schedule.
What are the benefits?
At the end of the session you will have dedicated time to writing in an intensive way and hopefully have met new research student colleagues who joined you in the session.
What should you bring?
You should bring any piece of work that you would like to focus on, as well as your chosen means of writing, whether it is on a laptop or on paper. Tea and coffee will be available in the room.
These are pilot sessions and BGRS will be requesting feedback to see how they are received and whether you have any suggestions for improvements.
