Summer term Graduate Research Symposium: Call for papers
Date: Monday 8 June 2015 Time: 1.30-5.00 Venue: Malet Street, room 538
Deadline for proposals: by Sunday 31 May
We are intending to hold for the first time a summer-term Graduate Research Symposium, as feedback we have received suggests that people find these events helpful, both for presenters and audience.
The day is for all graduate students in Birkbeck’s department of History, Classics and Archaeology and has been scheduled for the afternoon of Monday 8 June. Graduate students are invited to present their work in progress (this might be a chapter from your thesis, or a presentation for a conference), and all are welcome to attend and discover more about the research being produced in the department.
Students have found these events a helpful and encouraging environment in which to present. The day represents an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience delivering a paper and engage in discussion about their work in a relaxed and supportive setting. Papers given at this symposium count towards requirements for upgrade.
The time allotted to presenters will be up to 20 minutes, followed by 10-15 minutes for questions and discussion at the end of each session of 2-3 papers. Proposals for panels are also encouraged. PowerPoint facilities will be available for use if needed and tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.
For students who are not presenting the day is informative and useful in developing your own ideas and approaches for future presentations, as well as hearing about interesting research, so hopefully many of you will be attending.
Interested in presenting a paper? Send your name, paper title, thesis topic, supervisor’s name and 250-300 word abstract to Simon Jarrett simonj@jarr.demon.co.uk and Danae Karydaki dkaryd01@mail.bbk.ac.uk by Sunday 31 May 2015.
